What is Cosmelan?
Developed in Spain, Cosmelan is a highly innovative system that gently targets and treats unwanted pigmentation on the face. The two-phase intensive treatment programme firstly involves the application of a highly potent de-pigmenting mask. This is applied at the clinic and it is not washed off for up to 8-12 hours following application (dependent on skin type). The second treatment phase is an at-home maintenance cream that should be applied twice daily to enhance the effects of the mask.
This safe and non-invasive procedure treats the source of pigment formation to deliver a rapidly clearer, brighter and more clarified complexion.
How it works
Cosmelan works to fade the appearance of existing pigmentation whilst sedating and regulating the formation of future excess production of melanocytes in the melanin cells. Formulated with 70% active cosmeceutical ingredients ensure the treatment is effective yet gentle to achieve comfortable and successful results. The treatment may be performed during any time of the year including throughout the summer.
Cosmelan does not contain any aggressive hydroquinone or bleaching agents. The cream is further enhanced with mineral-sourced titanium dioxide to promote broad-spectrum protection against ultra violet radiation.
Used as part of a clinic and at-home action plan, Cosmelan can work fast and effectively to deliver exciting results even after one procedure.

Treatment may be performed on both old and new pigment deposits on patients of all ages and ethnicities. Cosmelan is particularly effective on melasma, a form of hormonally aggressed pigmentation. Melasma is most common on women and shows as bilateral patches of uneven skin tone particularly on the cheeks, forehead and top lip. Cosmelan is also effective to treat brown post-acne marks. These commonly appear on darker skin tones. The appearance of sun spots and ultra-violet aggressed uneven skin appearance may too be easily treated and cleared for a radiant and luminous finish.
The carefully formulated actives are safe to use on all skin colours and heritages. Cosmelan is the perfect alternative for those skins not suitable for laser, IPL or chemical peels.
The unique formula and customised delivery system removes the risk of skin burning, discomfort and downtime. This is particularly effective for those patients who do not want their work or social schedules interrupted.

To evaluate the efficacy and safety of the Cosmelan® method in treating facial melasma among patients with a multi-ethnic profile and differentiated skin phototypes (according to the Fitzpatrick scale). Cosmelan® offers a multi-focal approach to melasma treatments, thanks to its corrective and regulatory effects that modulates melanin synthesis, reduces transfer of the pigment from the melanosomes to the keratinocytes, while also eliminates melanin accumulation at epidermal level.
2 weeks prior to any Cosmelan treatment, it is recommended to have a mild enzymatic peel to remove excess dead skin cells and allow better penetration of the products.

Can any skin type be treated?
The unique active ingredients used in the Cosmelan depigmenting mask and cream enable effective treatment and results on all skin colours and ethnicities. The clinical mask will be required to activate for 8 hours on fairer complexions, 8-10 hours for olive and up to 10-12 hours for darker complexions.
The skin preparation process conducted by your dermal aesthetician prior to the mask’s application will customise the treatment further based on oily, combination or dry conditions.
Are there any side effects having a Cosmelan treatment?
Side effects with Cosmelan treatments are rare but easily managed. Some skins may feel a little red following removal of the in-clinic mask. This may be accompanied by some minor dryness and flaking. Any tightness may be easily relieved by applying a nurturing moisturiser such as Hydra-Vital Factor K.
It is recommended to avoid direct sun exposure following a Cosmelan treatment and to wear a broadspectrum SPF30 every day before, during and following treatment.
How many treatments will I need?
Most patients experience a dramatic reduction in the appearance of unwanted pigmentation following just one session* of Cosmelan. To ensure long-lasting results, it is recommended to use a recommended regime of specific home care products.
How will I look after treatment?
Following the application of the clinical de-pigmenting mask, it will need to remain on between 8-12 hours, depending on skin condition. After the required time, it may be simply removed at home.
For the next few days after removal, the skin may feel a little tight and there may be some localised flaking.
The daily use and re-application of a sunscreen is vital to ensue treatment efficacy and results. Keeping the skin well-hydrated following the removal of the Cosmelan mask is also vital to reduce unwanted dryness or flaking.
